Boho hairstyles are a summer staple. Straight out of the pool? Just rolled out of bed? Maybe haven’t washed your hair in a couple days? No problem. Check out these brilliant messy-cute hairstyles.

Pair with natural hair, ocean spray (try Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe), and dry shampoo for the win.

Boho Headbands

Pair these stylish headbands with long, natural waves, a bun, a half-up do, you name it. Perfect for a gorgeous boho hair look post-gym or for a lazy hair day.

Two Fishtails

Part your hair down the center and divide evenly onto both sides. Arrange into two loose fishtail braids starting at the nape of your neck, tie at the bottom and pull them apart a little bit to get the messy bohemian style. Pair with a headband, hat, or just wear it bare.

Boho Top-Knot

Half up styles are having a big moment. Loosely gather the top half (or maybe 1/4) of your hair into a ponytail, and coil the hair around itself and pin into place to get a gorgeous half bun. Gather three small sections right below your bun on the back of your head and turn it into a small French braid. The key here is to not put too much hair into your braid so there is still a good amount down. Depending on how much hair you have in the braid, you could complete the braid or tie it off where the French braid turns into a regular braid, both will give you a beautiful bohemian look.

Half French

This style is easiest to master in my experience when your hair is wet, although messy, loose braids are a boho staple. Start with all of your hair pushed back, divide your crown into 3 large sections. French braid your way back to the nape of your neck, and when you have worked all of your hair into the braid tie it off. You can also leave out a small section of hair from the braid and wrap this around your hair tie then tuck it in. Making large sections adds more style to this updo. You can even gently pull apart your braid to obtain the boho look.

Side Fish

Part your hair to one side, and grab a section from the side with the most hair. Start off with a tiny fishtail, then gradually pull all of your hair into the braid toward your shoulder, piece by piece. Tie at the bottom and pull apart your fish braid gently. Take this tip with a grain of salt, but this hairstyle looks even better when it’s a little messy and loosely put together.

Half Fish

Tie off your side fish once all of your hair is in your braid and voila! You could also mix this style with the half French and do a fish braid from the crown of your head back to the nape of your neck.

Crown Fish Pony

I’m having too much fun coming up with names for these hairstyles.. Nonetheless, this one is a showstopper for sure. Start off parting your hair to one side, and grab a section 1/4 of the way back from your forehead, leaving a small piece out of the braid in the front. Divide into three large sections and braid them into a chunky braid. Stop at the nape of your neck and put the remaining hair into a ponytail with the braid. Tie it off then pull your ponytail apart close to the hair tie to tighten it and add texture. Leave the rest of your hair natural and wavy, or twist and coil into a messy bun. Caution, this style may encourage you to wash your hair less often.

Tiny Crown Braids

Part your hair straight down the middle and gather only the hair within your crown (if it wouldn’t fit under a baseball cap, leave it down). Start a French braid on each side, and pin both sides back. The key here is symmetry, you can have messy braids or tight braids but make sure they aren’t different textures. If you’re looking for something a little wilder, twist the remaining hair on each side into two tiny buns.
