Your hair is in dire need of resuscitation. You’ve tried switching to a new shampoo, DIY’d your way through a leave-in conditioner that left your hair feeling greasier than ever, and trimmed your split ends. Still, nothing.

As if you didn’t already have enough to worry about, you now have to factor in the cold weather. If you’re like me, the worst part about winter isn’t the weather, but how it affects your already damaged hair. Your hair could use some major TLC. Before you decide to change your entire hair routine, you need to figure out what’s causing your hair to freak out in the first place. If you’re not sure what’s normal, here are the sings you need to look out for.

1. You have a lot of heat damage.
Tell us if this situation sounds familiar: You’ve been using your flat iron for so long that you don’t remember what it’s like to not have straight hair. Or you blow dry your hair to perfection after every wash. Although your hair looks fab in that moment, the aftermath isn’t as glamorous. Using too much heat will leave your hair feeling brittle before it eventually breaks off.

2. Your hair has lost its shine.
If your hair is looking dull, you are probably using too much hairspray or gel. The residue builds up over time and weighs your hair down. 4. Your hair is super tangled.
Many people don’t realize that the brush that you use to untangle your hair matters. If your brush has plastic bristles, you need to put it down and stay far away from it! The plastic bristles actually pull at your hair, which explains why lose so much hair when brushing.

5. You dye your hair too frequently.
You dye your hair so much that you forgot what your natural hair color is. Doing this constantly will strip your hair of its natural oils and leave it feeling dry and damaged. This is because dyes contain hydrogen peroxide and sometimes ammonia (which work together to bleach your hair and remove the original color).

6. You’re not moisturizing or conditioning your hair enough, so it’s extremely dry.
You need to get on the leave-in conditioner train, STAT. The conditioner doesn’t just lock in the moisture, it also helps repair damage from product buildup. You should be conditioning your hair on a regular basis. There are many leave-in conditioners that will keep your hair feeling soft and nourished!
